Apple is preparing a software update to fix an issue causing some iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max devices to freeze and unexpectedly restart.

The company confirmed to 9to5Mac that a fix is in development and is expected to roll out early next week, following reports from owners who encountered the problem shortly after receiving their new phones.

The issue has been linked in some cases to failed Face ID authentication. Users have reported their devices becoming unresponsive before restarting, raising concerns that the problem could be hardware-related.

9to5Mac said it was able to reproduce the behaviour on an iPhone 18 Pro while attempting to authenticate within Apple’s Passwords app. The phone froze and subsequently restarted, with a panic log appearing in iPhone Analytics.

Apple has not revealed what is causing the crashes or specified which iOS update will contain the fix.

The company’s confirmation does, however, indicate that affected users should not need to replace their phones to resolve this particular issue.

Before a software fix was confirmed, owners reported trying a variety of troubleshooting methods, including resetting Face ID, reinstalling iOS and running Apple’s diagnostic tools.

Some users also contacted Apple Support, with reports suggesting certain devices were initially treated as potentially faulty. That led some customers to consider replacements, while others reportedly exchanged their phones after the crashes persisted.

It remains unclear how widespread the rebooting problem is or whether it affects all iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max configurations.

The issue adds an early software headache to the launch of Apple’s latest flagship phones.

Previous iPhone launches have also encountered problems shortly after release, including reception concerns surrounding the iPhone 4, bending complaints involving the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, and a camera-shaking bug on some iPhone 14 Pro models.

For iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max owners experiencing the current freezing and rebooting problem, Apple’s promised software update should provide a resolution as early as next week.
